Soldiers from both sides describe their experience of shell fire and the effects, both physical and psychological, it had on them and their colleagues. Some men developed small strategies to cope with being trapped by incessant shell fire as a way of preventing the onset of shell shock, whilst others only found relief when the barrage was lifted and they were instructed to go over the top.
