The Economics of Slavery

Slavery has evolved and continues to play a role in today's economy. As part of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Freedom season, we look at what 'freedom' is not.

This year, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is examining the concept of "freedom" and what it is. In this programme we look at what freedom isn't. Curator Robert Blyth of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich gives us a potted history of the British slave trade, and the extent to which it underpinned transatlantic trade. But we also look at modern day slavery. Aidan MacQuade, director of the campaign group Anti-Slavery International explains what form it takes in today's world. And Mende Nazer of Sudan and Marissa of the Philippines recount their experience as slaves.
