Rosetta Probe Awakes

The Rosetta deep space probe wakes after a deep slumber; Immunity and malnutrition; After Higgs, is particle physics in crisis?

The Rosetta space probe, which aims to land a robot on a distant comet and ride it, rodeo-style, around the sun, awakes from a 31-month sleep to begin its final approach. Jonathan Amos reports on the electric atmosphere at the European Space Agency when the probe responded after an agonising wait.

Immunity Against Parasitic Worms
Scientists in the US report an unexpected benefit of vitamin A deficiency. In mice, this malnutrition has the effect of boosting the gut’s resistance to certain types of parasitic worm. In humans, the finding could have future consequences for sufferers of Crohn's disease and other inflammatory conditions.

Is Particle Physics in Crisis?
Two years after the Higgs Boson was triumphantly identified at CERN in Geneva, scientists are beginning to scratch their heads as to why they have not since also discovered several other novel particles. The Large Hadron Collider was expected to find evidence for, amongst other things, a higher level of physics, beyond the theories that predicted the Higgs. In particular, proof was expected of a host of particles that would exist if a theory known as supersymmetry has anything to do with it. Roland Pease went along to a meeting at the Royal Society in London, attended by some of the most-scratched heads in current physics.
