January 1969
- Three men were killed and a fourth was injured after a storage tank collapsed at Fawley Oil Refinery.
- John Fairfax set off from the Canaries, in a boat designed by Cowes boat builder Uffa Fox. He was attempting to be the first to row the Atlantic.
- He completed the row in July - after 180 days at sea.
- Southern England was battered by gales.

January 1979
- Plans were announced to bring Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose to the surface of the Solent.
- A former nursing home in Bournemouth was gutted by fire.
- The Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth caught fire.
- Snow caused disruption in Dorset.
- A barge caught fire on the Medina on the Isle of Wight.
- Red Arrows parked a fighter jet in Poole's Arndale Centre - the gnat was there as park of an RAF careers display.
- HMS Avenger was anchored off Portland.
- HMS Southampton was launched just before midnight at Woolston - defying union protests.
- Boat trains were on a reduced service to Weymouth because of a strike.
- Southampton council was celebrating 100 years of public transport in the city.
- A new Admiral took over at Portsmouth docks.
- Alec Stock was manager of AFC Bournemouth.
- Walter Harris from Bournemouth celebrated his 100th birthday.
- Dustmen were on strike in Southampton & Winchester.
- A shortage of salt meant some roads in the south weren't treated.
- The largest crane ever seen on the Isle of Wight was used in Newport to lift a portable building over a house. Β The building contained a kidney dialysis machine.Β
- Ambulancemen in Essex provided an emergency only service in support of their pay claim
- Hospital workers in the NUPE union took industrial action in support of a pay claim
- In Yorkshire, hospitals were affected by the strike of water and sewage workers

January 1987
- Test tube triplets from Bournemouth celebrated their 1st birthday
- Southampton based cruise liner Canberra rescued a family in the Pacific Ocean who ran into difficulties whilst trying to sail around the world.
- The inquest into the death of Southampton man Michael Lush, who was killed while rehearsing a stunt for the Late Late Breakfast Show, opened in Milton Keynes.
- The former Gaumont theatre in Southampton re opened as 'The Mayflower'.
- There were demonstrations in London, to mark the 1st anniversary of the Wapping print dispute.
- The site for the nuclear power station Sizewell B was approved in Sufolk.
- Greek tanker Olympic Dream was on fire in the North Sea.
- British Telecom workers were on strike. Β
- If you weren't a British Telecom customer, you were probably had a Mercury phone.
- Australia beat England by 33 runs in the cricket.
