Benazir Bhutto - 1986
Benazir Bhutto was the first woman to lead a Muslim country in modern history. Educated abroad at both Harvard and Oxford, she returned to Pakistan in 1977, only to see her father who was Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan People’s Party be overthrown and then executed in 1979.
Benazir was subsequently placed under house arrest and later exiled. She followed in her father’s footsteps as party leader, and in 1988 she became Prime Minister herself.
In this clip from 1986 she talks about the difficulties that her family have faced, her planned return trip to Pakistan and her hopes for the future.
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007.
