Ernest Ruzindaza has been permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) in Rwanda since 2008. He co-ordinates all technical activities and oversees the budget of the Ministry and its six technical agencies. Rwanda has been food secure since 2009.聽 This has been achieved through land consolidation, connecting farmers to their neighbours, innovative cow-sharing schemes, expansion of technologies linking farmers to food buyers and localised co-operative farming programmes.

Jean-Pierre Halkin is a senior European Commission civil servant. Since 2011, Jean-Pierre has been in charge of the unit in EuropeAid which is responsible for Rural Development, Food Security and Nutrition. Among their key priorities are addressing hidden hunger, or under-nutrition and boosting resilience to chronic food insecurity.

Girish Menon is Director of International Operations at WaterAid UK. His department oversees four regional teams (Asia, West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa) that manage the UK-funded country programmes. He says achieving food security is impossible without also securing water, sanitation and hygiene.

Luca Montanarella is the action leader on Soil at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, based in Ispra, Italy.聽 His latest project is a Soil Atlas of Africa, which was produced in collaboration with European and African soil scientists.聽 He says that soils are not the same everywhere, and are precious resources, just as important to protect and appreciate as water or air.聽
