December 1971
- The Guernsey Fisher left on her maiden voyage from Southampton. She was the first container ship to be run from Southampton by British Rail.
- Sussex Police were holding a motorboat in chichester harbour, believed to be the home of pirate radio station "radio Free Solent"
- A dispute at Southampton Docks was referred to the Department of Employment for conciliation or arbitration according to Docks Board.Β
- The maiden flight of the third Concorde plane 01 was cut short when it was discovered that the under-carriage was stuck.Β
- Figures showed that the RAF based at Thorney Island flew a record number of missions in 1971, saving 31 lives.
- Over Β£35,000 was stolen from Woolworths in London's in Oxford Street.
- National Hunt Jockey, Stan Mellor became first to ride 1,000 winners, after he won the Novices' Chase at Nottingham.

December 1985
- Dorset police were investigating the death of a young boy whose body was found by A35 near Bridport.
- Fire destroyed a large part of Lonspee Special School in Canford Heath. Β
- Police in Poole were investigating the murder of Steven Radburn in his flat in the Bearwood estate.Β
- The Isle of Wight symphony orchestra were celebrating a sponsorship deal with Sealink.
- The historic silk Mill at Whitchurch was saved from closure.
- A new coastguard station - the Solent Maritime rescue centre - opened at Lee-on- Solent. Using new technology, the centre would cover an area from Hengistbury Head to Beachy head.
- Much of East Anglia was under a heavy blanket of snow.
- A four year old girl was being held hostage in a siege in Northolt.
- There was surprise as Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof was overlooked in the new years honours.
- A century of motoring was marked with a rally at Silverstone.
- Thousands fled their homes as Mount Etna erupted.
- There were celebrations in Paris for The Eiffel Tower's centenary.Β
- A terrorist attack on Vienna airport.
- A plane crashed into a California housing estate.
December 1991
- Students from Calmore Middle School near Southampton were sharing lessons with students from Houston in Texas by a satellite & cable video link.Β
- A service was held at St Anne's Church in Portsmouth to mark the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the battleships Prince of Wales & Repulse.Β
- A survey carried out by Portsmouth Poly claimed that 9,000 defence jobs could go in Hampshire over the next two years.Β
- There was a big fall in the amount of freight carried through Poole docks.
- And Ian Botham was in rehearsals for his role in the panto Jack and the Beanstalk in Bournemouth.Β
- Southampton drew 1 - 1 with Liverpool in the Rumbelows Cup.
- Bombs exploded in Manchester & Blackpool.Β
- The serious fraud office was investigating the transfer of money out of the Maxwell pension fund after the death of Robert Maxwell last month.
- The Maastricht summit was underway in Holland.
- Trading in the second flotation of British Telecom shares started.
- Freddy Mercury died on November 24th. Elton John paid tribute to him on a special Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1 programme.Β
- There were reports from Moscow saying that President Gorbachev was set to resign.
- Vietnamese boat people were being repatriated to Hong Kong.
