  • Harold Wilson took over as British Prime Minister.
  • The US President election was won by Lyndon B Johnson..
  • Leonid Brezhnev & Alexei Kosygin replaced Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev.
  • The Olympic Games started in Tokyo.
  • Dr Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • There was an unofficial Strike on the London underground.
  • Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts married Shirley Shepherd.
  • Philips began experimenting with colour TV.
  • Three people were in space together for the first time.
  • The Olympic Games were underway in Tokyo. (started 10 October)

  • A Ringwood Scout Group loaned their entire savings to help a Scout leader who was facing a Β£100,000 drugs charge in Spain.
  • A Saudi Prince visited HMS Daedalus in Lee On Solent before travelling to Cowes on a hovercraft.
  • British Canoe Union held the biggest slalom event in the south in Winchester.
  • 200 parents staged a demonstration in Southampton, demanding the council closed Church Street to traffic permanently.
  • Owners of Isle of Wight plane makers Britten Norman called in the receivers.Β 
  • Blind darts were being played in Gosport.
  • Unofficial industrial action led to blackouts across much of the UK.
  • Nuclear submarine Dreadnought was due to sail through the Suez Canal on its way to Iran where she was to take part in exercises with the Iranian Navy. Β Egypt say that permission was refused, Britain says the request was withdrawn.
  • The Government decided to revalue the pound by allowing it to float upwards against the dollar & other currencies.
  • Prince Charles was on a tour or Australia having already visited America, where he watched the space shuttle Enterprise take off on its last experimental free flight.
  • Three thousand members of the Royal Naval Association attended a service and march down Whitehall in London.
  • British Leyland Workers voted on management's proposals for a unified pay bargaining structure, due to be introduced in 2 years.
  • British Leyland have denied reports that they are deliberately scrapping car components worth millions of pounds.
  • Skipper Victor Rixon pleaded guilty to 5 offences against port regulations & was fined Β£160 by Plymouth magistrates, after he sailed too close to the Royal Yacht Britannia.
  • Chancellor Dennis Healey announced his mini budget.

  • Twenty Two staff in the accounts dept. of 'Havant Hypermarket' won Β£90,000 in the football pools.Β 
  • There was a fire at the 'Clock House Hotel' in BournemouthΒ 
  • Bob Hope's Portsmouth Guildhall concert was cancelled following discovery of wartime bomb nearby now being defused
  • Dorset Police questioned youths about damage to Wimborne Minster and the model village.
  • International speed trials were being held off Portland.
  • The 'Townsend Thoresen' ferry company finalised their move to Portsmouth from Southampton docks.Β 
  • More than 50 people were made homeless when their block of flats was destroyed by fire in Southsea.Β 
  • The 'Grand Hotel', Brighton was bombed by the IRA whilst the Government Cabinet were all in residence, for the conservative party conference.
  • Anatoly Karpov & Gary Kasparov pitted their wits in the World Chess Championships in Moscow.
  • Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was Bishop TUTU of South Africa.Β
