Last week Birmingham Metropolitan College defended its decision to ask staff and visitors to remove any face coverings so individuals are "easily identifiable at all times".

The move led to claims that Muslim students were being discriminated against after women were told they could not wear the niqab, a face veil that leaves only a slot for the eyes.

By Friday though, due to media attention the college relented and said that they would allow niqab's to be warn inside the college but students would have to remove their veils in order to be identified by security staff.

The incident has lead to a national debate in Britain about whether face veils should be banned in public places.
