Some people call it affirmative action, others positive discrimination, but the objective is the same - to build a fairer society by treating some people unfairly. But does it actually work?

Business Daily reports from Brazil on the effort to bring a more representative racial mix to the nation's universities. Federal universities now judge candidates on low incomes or of African descent more favourably.

And we look at the US - where the first affirmative action programmes were introduced in the 1960s. We find out about the research done at the University of San Diego suggesting there would be more black doctors, lawyers and university professors without affirmative action and ask whether discriminating in favour of disadvantaged communities actually puts them at a greater disadvantage.
