The Shambles in York is one of the few streets in the country to survive from Tudor times. The buildings give clues to their Tudor past, they have wooden beams and upper floors which stick out. In Tudor times, most of the property along the Shambles would have been butchers shops and this helps to explain why the streets were so dirty.
