The Great Chinese Dream

Why lifting people into the ranks of the middle class remains China's biggest challenge

America isn't the only nation with a great dream. China's president Xi Jinping has been dream weaving too - trying to find ways to inspire his people to aspire to a better life, supported by a higher income. It is part of his project to sustain China's formidable growth and propel its people into the ranks of the world's middle class.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's chief business correspondent, Linda Yueh, will be explaining how the Chinese dream looks very much like the American one - except without the picket fence.

So can the dream become a reality? We'll be discovering that avoiding the so-called middle income trap could be China's biggest challenge in decades. We meet the Italian artisans hoping to profit from China's burgeoning middle class.

And, commentator Lucy Kellaway will - in typical contrarian style - be exhorting this year's new graduates to aim low.
