Rice and dairy farming in the Hongya County
Farmer Liu, from Hongya County, uses bamboo leaves as feed for his cows. Cow dung provides methane for cooking as well as good fertiliser for their bamboo plantations. This is recycling at its best.
If the villagers can continue to green their mountains and clean up the rivers, perhaps one day the area will be able to welcome tourists too - another source of income. In the meantime, some crops have to be grown in the lower part of the valley, such as rice to feed the villagers.
Unfortunately, the supply is not sufficient for the whole community, so the government has promised free grain over eight years to encourage these farmers to continue with dairy farming. But what will happen after the eight years are up? It's a point of concern, and farmers have to think ahead. But for now the harvest has been gathered and it's time for the villagers to celebrate the Moon Festival. And what better way than to have a milk-drinking competition?
