The White Horse of Uffington (pt 2/3) - How old is it?
A reporter meets an archaeologist at the Uffington White Horse. The White Horse was made by carving the shape of a horse into the hillside and filling the excavation with local chalk. The archaeologist explains the origin of the White Horse, and that it can also be found on an ancient coin.
The reporter and the archaeologist dig where some 2,000-year-old coins were found nearby. They consider whether the White Horse is the same age as the coins, or if it might be 1,200-years-old and made to celebrate King Alfred’s victory on the same hill. The archaeologist explains both of these theories have been questioned recently, and the Horse is now believed to be 3,000 years old.
