The IRA and Sinn FΓ©in
The armed campaign of the Irish Republican Army lasted over 30 years, claiming almost 1,800 victims. The election of hunger striker Bobby Sands to parliament in 1981 signalled the increasing influence of the political strategy of Sinn FΓ©in on the tactics of the IRA. This twin approach was referred to as "the armalite and ballot box".
