Video: Bridget Christie Minds the Gap
Bridget visits Newington Green, known as the 'birthplace of modern feminism' due to its famous resident Mary Wollstonecraft, who set up a school for girls in the area.
Wollstonecraft, who was also the mother of author Mary Shelley, wrote A Vindication of the Rights on Woman in 1792. This landmark political work focused on the idea that women possess the same intellect as men, but as they are not educated to the same degree and conditioned for marriage, they succumb to their sensibilities.
