Eastleigh - a bitter battle for every vote
Dates for your diary. February 28th and March 20th. The result in the Eastleigh by election on the first could have a significant impact on what happens on the second - the day of the budget. The Conservatives - who've said they'll be targetting 20 Liberal Democrat seats at the next election - will have to dig deep into their supply of "cunning plans" to satisfy their backbenches if they fail to take Eastleigh in a by election called following the resignation of the disgraced Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne. But the Liberal Democrats, it seems, are up for the fight against their coalition partners - that's what the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Political Editor for the South of England, Peter Henley's been telling me, having observed the campaign so far.
