Elsie and Doris Waters, the two glamorous ladies holding the finishing-line tape in this news item, were long-time Steyning residents but were better known as 'Gert and Daisy', a popular comedy double act who entertained troops during the war and featured prominently on several radio shows.
Norman Read (also a Steyning resident), who starts the race, was an Olympic gold medallist who won the 50km road-walking race in 1956.
