The poetry of Sophocles (audio)
Oliver Taplin and Reginald Gibbons discuss Sophocles' style of writing and the development of poetry. Taplin commences by discussing Sophocles' poetic style and discussing the hidden depths within his clear and simplistic language. He links this layering of language and metaphor to earlier writers such as Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔr but illustrates how Sophocles extends and develops this work. The extract concludes with Gibbons reading an extract from some of Sophocles' maritime poetry, illustrating how both Greek and British audiences could respond to this material.
