The Demon Drink
Scotland’s identity is inextricably with whisky and as Brian Cox discovers, that relationship was forged during the early 19th century. Scotland changed from a rural to an industrialized society and the 1820’s and 30’s are rich with the statistics of drunkenness. In Edinburgh and Glasgow, it’s estimated there was a bar for every 130 people. For every half pint of beer the Scots consumed, they drank two pints of whisky.
