A helper's tale
George Phillips was only 18 when Basque child refugees arrived at nearby Caerleon in 1937. One of eight children, all living in a small terraced cottage in Newport, George used to take 12-15 refugees back to his parents' house for Sunday tea. A coach driver, George used to borrow a bus from his employer to transport the children to and from their colony at Cambria House. His care and kindness is recalled by his daughter Sonia Fisher, who only discovered what he did when he showed her photographs of the Basque refugees in later life.
