Dancing the Misago
Rebecca is a primary school teacher in the small town of Tegbi in the Volta region of Ghana. She is also a keen dancer and is part of a local dancing group. Her favourite dance is the Misago, which tells the story of the people's escape from a wicked chief, under the cover of darkness. As women carried the load during the escape, women dance with baskets on their heads containing lit oil lamps. During the escape the people also walked backwards so their footprints could not be followed, therefore the dancers incorporate backwards movements too. Rebecca explains the story of the dance as we see the dancers rehearsing the moves.
