The Space Race - USA and USSR
For many years, the USA and USSR were in a race to conquer space. In 1957, Russia sent 'Sputnik', the first rocket, into space. President Kennedy responded by promising to send an American to the Moon. Eventually the two nations decided to end the Cold War and work together and, in 1981, the space shuttle Columbia was launched.
