A Board School teacher drills her pupils in cleanliness, handwriting and morals. Lessons were formal and good discipline was insisted upon. Children followed set patterns of behaviour, called drills. Lessons were based on the four 'R's, reading, 'riting, religion and 'rithmetic. After the 1870 Education Act, many schools were taken over by the Government to become Board Schools. Education became free for all children in 1891.
