Excavations along Hadrian's Wall go back to the Victorian period, and a tiny percentage of its great length has been covered, but the finds have been impressive. Best of these are the Vindolanda Tablets, letters written in lower-case cursive script, which give a valuable insight into life on Hadrian's Wall.

We learn the name which soldiers gave to the native Britons: 'Brittunculi' - "wretched Brits"; we see a letter being read for the first time by expert, Professor Alan Bowman; and we are shown a replica of a tablet and nib pen, many of which were found alongside the tablets themselves.
