Filming Tibetan macaques in China (pt 4/4)
Early in the morning, cameraman Hao Jian practises taiji, a form of exercise which relaxes the mind and body. He feels he needs to find an inner balance when the pressure of work gets too much. The peace and quiet of the Buddhist temples and monasteries on Emei Mountain provide an ideal haven. Many of them have been restored after having been damaged during the Cultural Revolution under Chairman Mao. Now, people come here to seek spiritual purification. But are tourists becoming a distraction? The abbot thinks not. In fact, he feels that the more visitors come - be they tourists or pilgrims - the greater the opportunity of spreading knowledge about Buddhism and spiritual growth. Back at the television station, Hao Jian views his film with colleagues. His programme will hopefully show viewers the tension between tourist growth and ecological concerns and help them realise that man and nature can and should live in harmony.
