10,000 new school places needed in Kent by 2016

Matt Davison sits in alongside Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

10,000 new school places will be needed in Kent by 2016 - that is the equivalent of 25 new primary schools and two secondaries. The figures are revealed in a plan drawn up by Kent County Council which says the rising birth rate, and families moving into the county are the main reasons for the projected shortage.

However, the majority of the extra places needed will be made up by expanding current schools rather than building new ones (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

Also, Medway Council is looking at putting a limit on the number of strip clubs in the area. Rochester currently has two licensed venues and the authority wants to ensure no more are opened (06:22 and 07:22).

And, there are calls for Dover to be linked by rail to Gatwick airport.

Dover District council wants a train service to run between the port town and the airport via Ashford International station.

Council bosses plan to lobby the government for a direct connection to be included in any bid for the rail franchise renewal due in 2014 (06:52 and 08:48).
