Limestone landscapes - caverns and the water table
Spectacular limestone landscapes can also be found underground. Chemical erosion creates intricate labyrinths of caverns and chambers with stalactites and stalagmites. When the flowing water reaches a layer of impermeable rock it flows horizontally, creating the water table. The level of the water table fluctuates. The water eventually emerges further downstream as a spring or well. At this point, the water is rich in mineral deposits and as it drips over vegetation and objects, petrification occurs.
