Conflict between Plains Indians and whites

Lakota Sioux elder Black Elk describes the life of the Lakota Sioux before the arrival of the white settler people, also known as the Wasichu or 'greedy people'. The Plains Indians lived a nomadic life, following the buffalo and living off the land. This brought them into conflict with the encroaching settlers and US government, leading to their eventual defeat and confinement into reservations.
