David Wickham interviews a cross section of black people about life in South Africa and their perceptions of change in the state, especially regarding government measures to ease apartheid.The contributors are a domestic servant who lives with a white family and only sees her own children once a month, a teacher, an activist, a businessman, a councillor and an actor who uses drama to satirise apartheid.

PW Botha had been elected president the year before this programme was made, and some measures easing the restrictions of apartheid were put through the South African Parliament, such as the repeal of the Mixed Marriages Act. However, resistance to apartheid intensified in the townships and a state of emergency was declared in some areas of the country.
