Cataract operations in Kent fall by 900 in a year

Matt Davison sits in alongside Emma B with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

The NHS in Kent is denying it is restricting access to patients who need cataract operations. The Royal National Institute for Blind People claims the county is using simple eye tests to determine whether people need surgery - but Kent's health trusts say they use a series of tests to assess clinical need.

Clara Eaglen from the RNIB and eye surgeon Neil Rowson share their concerns with Matt and Emma (07.07) whilst Shadow Health Minister Jamie Reed and Dr. Robert Stewart from NHS Kent and Medway offer their opinions on the topic (08.07).

Also on the programme, more than a third of fires in Kent schools in the last four years were started deliberately.

Out of 115 fires, 44 were the result of arson, leading the insurance industry to demand greater vigilance among teachers and caretakers to prevent the number of blazes.

Brendan Wall is the headteacher of St Simon Stock Catholic School in Maidstone, which was victim of an arson attack last summer. He and Steve Griffiths from Kent Fire and Rescue voice their views at 07.22.

And Canterbury City Council is installing charging points for electric cars at its three park and ride sites. It is believed to be the first council in Kent to do so and is aimed at encouraging residents and visitors to go green.

Reporter Jo Burn investigated the sites in East Kent (06.53) and Emma takes a Twizy, a brand new electric car, for a spin (07.48).
