'Lord of the Flies' - historical context (pt 1/3)
The background to William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' with primary footage and close textual analysis. The commentary runs alongside flickering black and white images of air raid sirens and explosions to create a sense of what life was like for the evacuee protagonists of Golding's novel.
Golding's inspiration for the novel is explored, taking us back to his own childhood literary fantasies of RM Valentine's 'Coral Island'. Working as a teacher at a public boys' school soon opened Golding’s eyes to adolescent boys' behaviour, and formed the basis of the novel. The narrator also comments upon symbolism in 'Lord of the Flies' and its experimental nature.
