Drop in illegal immigrants trying to enter Britain through Dover

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

New figures seen by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent reveal there has been a fall in the number of illegal immigrants trying to enter Britain through Dover.

Just over 9,600 were caught trying to cross the Channel last year compared with over 29,000 in 2009.

However, a think-tank, which monitors migration into the UK, says the opening of a new migrant camp in Northern France could lead to an increase again in refugees trying to stowaway on lorries bound for Kent (06:07, 07:07 and 8:07).

Every five minutes, a child runs away from home or care. A quarter of runaways are at serious risk of harm. That is according to the Children's Society which says more needs to be done to protect runaways from physical and sexual abuse.

Now Kent has become one of the first areas of the country to sign up to a Runaways Charter which will see the authorities reacting much more quickly when children are reported missing.

Official figures show 2,000 children ran away last year, but the Childrens Society says the real figure could even be three times that number (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).

Built two centuries ago, when the threat of invasion was very real, Dover's Western Heights is about to find itself at the centre of a very 21st century battle.

It is between environmentalists, who want to save the green area around the fort, and developers, who have applied for permission to build (06:39 and 07:39).
