Developers plan to create hazardous waste depot on Isle of Grain

They are already fighting proposals for a massive new airport, and are campaigning over safety concerns about a nearby gas plant, but now residents on the Isle of Grain say they are gearing up for a new battle.

Developers Peel want to create a hazardous waste depot close to the village of Grain - which would process up to a quarter of a million tonnes of waste each year (06:06, 07:07 and 08:07).

One in five workers employed by developers behind two schemes in west Kent will be recruited locally, under a new agreement.

Town and Country Housing Group is building hundreds of new homes to regenerate the Sherwood and Ramslye areas of Tunbridge Wells.

However, a Local Labour Clause in the plans approved by the borough council is that 20% of the workforce will come from within a 15-mile radius of the site (06:24, 07:22 and 08:22).

The brother of Rachel Chandler - the Kent woman kidnapped with her husband by Somali pirates - has criticised the support the family received from the UK authorities.

Speaking to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ for the first time, Stephen Collett said he was given contradictory advice, and felt out of his depth as he negotiated for nine months to secure their release.

The Chandlers from Tunbridge Wells were only released a year after they were captured, when Mr Collett paid out hundreds of thousands of pounds.

However, he says the Foreign Office moved too slowly when the couple were first taken, and did not support the family while they were in captivity (06:39 and 08:48).
