A Kent headteacher opposes expansion of grammar schools

The headteacher of one of Kent's largest comprehensive schools has launched an outspoken attack on moves to expand grammar schools.
In March, Kent became the first local authority in 50 years to vote to support parents in the county calling for more grammar places.
John Stanley, head of St John's Catholic Comprehensive school in Gravesend, says the move will make it even harder for schools like his which do not select on academic ability to meet tougher government targets on exam results (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).
Free health checks for the over 40's have only been offered to fewer than one in ten people in Kent - according to figures obtained by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent.
The so-called "Health MOT's" are designed to help tackle lifestyle problems like heart and kidney disease, diabetes and the risk of strokes.
The government idea was rolled out in 2009 -over half a million people are eligible for the tests in Kent and Medway but only 16,700 had one (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie - the Earl and Countess of Wessex - will be in Grove Green near Maidstone later, to officially open a new community orchard, which was planted to mark the Queen's 60-years on the throne.
The collection of trees will become a wildlife haven and a place where local children can gather their own fruit (06:54 and 08:53).
