Thanet Council opposes Manston Aiport night flights

Sue Mansfield sits in alongside John with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

At what was at times an ill-tempered meeting on Thursday night, Thanet Council has voted to oppose all night flights at Manston Airport.

The Conservative group argued for greater flexibility on flights to and from the former RAF base, but were outvoted by the controlling Labour group together with all but one of the independent councillors.

The vote itself is not completely binding on the airport's future.

Sue and John speak to Thanet Council leader, Labour's Clive Hart and leader of the Conservative Group Bob Bayford (07.07) who were present at the heated debate on Thursday night.

Mike Batchelor, owner on Sunpex Travel Agents in Manston and Broadstairs and Phil Rose, founder of the campaign group No Night Flights share their views on the vote (08.07).

The Chief Executive of Manston Airport Charles Buchanan joins Sue and John live in the studio to reflect on the decision and discusses whether or not the airport can continue to expand without the council's backing (08.35).

Also on the programme, we are live in Northfleet ahead of the opening of Europe's largest cycle park.

The 43 hectare Cyclopark in North Kent has a world class cycling and running track, a championship standard mountain bike track and a world-class BMX track.

The park's Chief Executive Laurence Tricker speaks of his excitement about the launch this weekend (06.52) as does Billy Whenman, a professional cyclist from Gravesend (07.49).

And we get reaction from Hartsdown Community College Headteacher Andy Somers after his school missed out on vital funding to refurbish the buildings.

An entire window fell out over one weekend, smashing down on an area that children frequently use at breaktime. Yet Hartsdown, along with 43 other schools in Kent missed out on receiving a chunk of the Β£2billion refurbishment programme announced by Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Andy talks about his disappointment alongside Philip Bunn, Principal at Castle Community College in Deal, whose school was one of the 14 to receive money (07.22).

Thanet North MP also gives his verdict on the Government's decision (08.23).
