Although the Ilulissat fjord is very deep, its mouth is very shallow and the huge keels of young icebergs can easily run aground here.

The Titanic iceberg was stuck, but with other large icebergs backing up behind it, something had to give. When an iceberg reaches its tipping point and rolls free into the ocean, it unleashes a massive amount of power.

No footage of such a moment exists from 1910, but a recent example of this phenomenon can be seen in home video from the Inuit fishing community of Ilulissat. Two fishermen, Eli Kristofferson and Soren Peterson, recount their close escape from the terrifying effects of an iceberg roll.

By rolling, the Titanic iceberg had lifted itself over the mouth of the fjord and was free. By now it was only half a mile across, but it had reached the open ocean.
