John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

It is the local elections today, with voters in two areas of Kent joining people across the country in casting their votes.

Councils in England Scotland and Wales are holding polls. And people in London will be voting on who they want to be their Mayor (06:07, 07:07 and 08:12).

Kent's grammar schools may be failing to challenge their more able pupils and should raise expectations for GCSE results.

That is from a new report which claims the current national benchmark of five A*-Cs including English and maths is too low for grammars, and should be set at five As or A*s for brighter students.

It also shows the performance of grammar schools varies from region to region (07:10 and 08:10).

Walpole Bay near Margate has failed to make this year's Good Beach Guide. But 19 other beaches in Kent, including many in Thanet, hit the gold standard of being "recommended" in a survey by the Marine Conservation Society.

Walpole Bay failed based on samples taken by the Environment Agency. Last year Kent had no failures. Rachel Wyatt is from the Marine Conservation Society (07:48 and 08:53).
