Building the Lunatic Line
Making yourself at home in the empire usually meant building a railway. And there was no more ambitious episode of railway building than the making of the Uganda Railway. Known as the Lunatic Line it stretched from Mombasa in the east to Lake Victoria in the West. Thousands of Indian workers were killed in the course of construction – some by man-eating lions.
