Grass Fires
One of the main reasons that grasslands began to take over from the forests 6 million years ago was that grasses were supremely adapted to start and survive fires.
At a natural park in South Africa, Professor Iain Stewart experienced first-hand the ferocity of a grassland fire. He wore a specially supplied fireproof suit equipped with thermometers. The whole event was also filmed with a heat-sensitive camera. It was a unique experiment and the results were extremely interesting.
