Government designates swathe of land in North Kent a wildlife haven

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

What is more important? Nature or jobs? This is essentially the question this morning after the government designated a swathe of land in North Kent a wildlife haven. It includes the Isle of Grain, where the Mayor of London Boris Johnson wants to build an airport (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

Sixty children from Kent who passed the 11+ have not got a grammar school place this year. Meanwhile, applications for places at Kent schools from children outside the county are the highest for three years.

15,000 parents in the county are finding out today which secondary schools their children will be going to in September. Kent County Council says there is a shortage of grammar school places in West Kent (06:41, 07:42 and 08:48).

Do you remember playing in amusement arcades as a child? Kent's seaside towns once-boasted some of the best in the country. However, it is now being claimed that a proposed new tax on gaming machines could do lasting damage, and cost jobs. The claim comes from Colin Mallery, an industry consultant working for Broadstairs-based Harry Levy Amusements (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).
