Kent councils are collaborating to help first time buyers

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Is it up to politicians to help us get a mortgage? That is exactly what will happen in Kent from April.

Our councils are clubbing together to pool Β£24m to provide guarantees to banks which lend to first time buyers. The aim is to help anyone with just a 5% deposit get a foot on the property ladder.

We hear from newlywed Steffanie Ceylan in Ashford, who is looking to take advantage of the new scheme, and John Oakley from the National Association of Estate Agents (07.07).

Managing Director of relocation company Sourcing Property, Jo Eccles gives her verdict on the proposals, and Kevin Lynes from Kent County Council reveals how the scheme will be funded (08.07).

Also on the programme, Gillingham fans say the club has gone back on a promise to refund fans travelling expenses to a recent game.

The Gills lost 4-3 against Accrington Stanley a fortnight ago, prompting manager Andy Hessenthaler to offer fans a refund for their troubles. Instead, the club have offered fans discounted travel for their away trip to Plymouth Argyle.

Chairman Paul Scally tells John and Clare why the club made that decision (07.38).

And council tax in Medway is going to be frozen this year, but it will be more expensive to park.

Charges will generally rise by 10p per hour for the short stay car parks but others are rising by as much as 100%, which contradicts governmental guidance to councils saying they should not use car parking as a cash cow.

We speak to the Deputy Conservative Leader of Medway Council, Alan Jarrett, and the Deputy Leader of the Labour group, Vince Maples (07.47).

Neville Gaunt, spokesman for the North Kent Federation of Small Businesses, tells us how the rise in parking charges might affect traders in the county (08.39).
