Rousing performance from 80 year old Saif Mohammed, web exclusive
Master musician Saif Mohammed leads a group of players in the bright sunshine of his remote village of Aspalsar in the Shekawati district of Rajasthan. He sings, laughs and plays the tandura, a long necked stringed instrument which he suggestively rides like a horse. Another old man plays the chimta, a clapping metal instrumen, now very rare, almost extinct. Bullocks and camels wander by. John Singh of the Jaipur Virasat (Heritage) Foundation watches with his community director Vinod Joshi. The foundation pays Saif a pension, now that he is too old to travel and make his living from playing. The pension helps buy food and also musical instruments - a harmonium, dhola, manjira, kartal and the chimta.
