Cutlery for birds
Galapagos finches are intelligent and ingenious. The woodpecker finch's beak, for example, is perfectly adapted for stripping away bark. But if the insect grub it is after is deep in the branch, it needs a tool. So the finch uses a cactus spine to poke into the hole and extract bits of the insect grub by stabbing it with the spine. Another bird has a different technique, using a stouter tool to lever the grub nearer the entrance to the hole where it can grab it with its beak.
