Number of people over 85 in Kent set for massive rise

The number of people aged over 85 in the county is set to rise by 70% in the next 15 years. That is much more than the average rise in the numbers of people in that age group across England.

According to government predictions, in the year 2026 there will be more than 71,000 people over 85 in Kent.

Councillors in Canterbury are calling for a review of old-style train services from East Kent to London. In a report to be discussed this week, they say the so-called "classic services" running to Victoria and Cannon Street have actually got slower, since the introduction of high-speed trains to St Pancras on the same lines two years ago.

A Kent Police officer says the work of volunteer street pastors is so valuable that he would like to see one in every town.

The Christian volunteers will be out over Christmas in nine Kent towns (as they are every weekend) offering moral support and practical help to anyone who overdoes it during a night out over the festive season.
