Gary Speed was found hanged yesterday morning. He was 42 years old, had a wife, two sons and a flourishing career as an international football manager. He was loved and admired by many people in the world of sport. They say he was a gentleman, they say he rarely showed a vulnerable side. And now he is dead.

His friends say they are numb with disbelief, is that how you felt when a loved one killed themselves? Or did you see it coming?

The news today is unlikely to make thoughts of a stay in hospital any more of an appealing prospect. An annual guide to safety in England's hospitals suggests that patients are more likely to die if they are admitted at weekends.
