Lady Sarah issues the writ to get custody of her son

Southouse tells Lady Sarah that her son does not belong to her, in fact nothing belongs to her. In a dream, she cradles a bundle, imagining Samuel in her arms. Garrow tells her that the baby is not there.

Lady Sarah demands that Southouse issue the writ, he warns her that it is doomed to failure. Sir Arthur reads aloud from the writ to his bored mistress, Lady Henrietta . Lady Sarah takes her jewellery, she confesses to Garrow that she stole it.
