MP Damian Green defends role over the relaxing of border controls

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

The last two weeks at Westminster could well have been among the busiest for the Ashford MP and Immigration Minister Damian Green since he took up his role at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Office last year.

Earlier this month the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Secretary Theresa May revealed that checks on people arriving at Britain's airports this Summer had been relaxed beyond a pilot scheme she had approved. The head of the UK Border Force Brodie Clark resigned over the matter, insisting ministers were aware of the policy and denying he had instructed staff to go beyond the pilot's remit.

Following questions in the House of Commons and a debate about border security, Damian Green appeared before Mp's on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Affairs Select Committee yesterday and told them Mr Clark had never mentioned that checks had been relaxed on non-Europeans, despite meeting him nine times during the pilot (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07.)

Highly sensitive information is being misplaced by Kent County Council. It is the worst authority in the country for the loss of confidential data through negligence or theft, according to civil liberties campaigners Big Brother Watch.

It has surveyed councils nationwide about the amount of data lost in the past three years. KCC came top disclosing 72 incidents of varying severity (06:17, 07:17 and 08:22.)

A Β£120 million project to update the East Kent rail signalling network will finally be completed between Christmas and New Year meaning major disruption to services between Ramsgate, Dover and Sittingbourne.

Buses will replace trains on many coast line services, adding up to an hour to services but Network Rail who are doing the work, say that they run weekend services only in that week so fewer passengers will be affected.

Rail commuters say they should have had more warning about the work (06:25, 07:22 and 08:39.)
