John Tusa reports on two Catholic communities in Belfast where it has been claimed by Northern Ireland Secretary of State Humphrey Atkins that the IRA are deliberately fuelling a climate of tension and fear as the republican hunger strike in the Maze prison continues.

Tusa looks at the activities of both the security forces and the paramilitaries in these areas, speaking to Paddy Devlin (Independent Socialist councillor for Andersonstown) and Seamus Lynch (Republican Clubs councillor for the New Lodge area) to ascertain the mood of their constituents.

Brian Walker reports on the return of the papal envoy Monsignor John Magee to Rome after delivering Pope John Paul II's plea to the Maze prison hunger strikers and speaks to Bobby Sands' mother, Rosaleen Sands, on the condition of her son.

Also reported are the funerals of UDR private Richard McKee and RUC constable Gary Martin, as well as the visit of the papal envoy, accompanied by Cardinal Tomas O Fiaich, to the McKee family to express their sympathy.
