Young nationalists of the FWA go on the march
1967 - The Free Wales Army held their very first great public parade in Machynllth. The FWA were a group of young nationalists intent on making enough noise to invite the curiosity of the national press. Julian Cayo Evans from Lampeter led his troops in military fashion: they carried Welsh Dragon banners and wore peaked caps emblazoned with the insignia of the White Eagles of Snowdon. On 1 July 1969, the day of the Investiture of the Prince of Wales, six members of the FWA were convicted under the Public Order Act. After a trial lasting 53 days, Cayo and his second in command were sent down for 15 months. Cayo Evans died aged 57 in March 1995.
